Meet Me At The Back Of The Blue Bus

Blogmas Day 31!!!!! – Why do you blog?

Well it has come to the end of my challenge.  I believe I could have done better but Holidays got the better of me for a couple of days.  Thank you for sticking around if you did and thank you to any new followers!  I will try to keep my posts somewhat regular but with all the packing and organizing I have to do in the next little while to get ready for my year away I am not promising anything!

The last topic of the 31 day challenge is to talk about why I blog. I started this as a little project to keep family and friends in the loop as I lived in Australia for six months.  I have been wanting to write a bit more since I returned but have a hard time being creative about what to write about!

I am returning to Australia for a year and plan to update and write about my experiences much more regularly as soon as my trip gets started!   I plan on keeping up with my writing and travel when I get back to Canada!

Again I want to thank all of you who have taken the time to read my posts!  I’m still so new to this and have a long way to go but I am having fun and really hope to continue in the future!

Wishing all of you a very happy and healthy new year!  See you all in 2014!

Hugs and love!

If You Bore Me Then I’m Comfortable

Blogmas Day 30!!! – What’s in your makeup bag?

I recently attended a wedding and had a handbag big enough to fit my makeup bag inside…a rarity for wedding outfits usually!  Before I go into detail about what I carried I must make a couple of disclaimers:

1.  I’m a bit addicted to makeup.  Growing up I was never really interested…always a tomboy and never wearing any…it has only been since I turned 30 that I have fallen truly in love.
2.  I have a love/hate relationship with lip colour.  I absolutely love lipstick but hate wearing it…I feel like that’s all people see, that it’ll get on my teeth, that it will wear off all uneven and look ridiculous…and I also always have flakey lips which doesn’t work well with lipstick…so I tend to fulfill my love with lip glosses…you will see that for one wedding I have more than enough choice 😉

My makeup bag:  on sale from Indigo

IMG_0034From left to right:
1.  Buxom Full-on Lip Cream in Berry Blast….their range of lip products are my favourite!!  I have about five different shades.  I tend towards the ones that give a bit of a tingle.  They wear well and don’t dry my lips out.
2.  Rimmel Apocalips Lip Laquer in Apocaliptic…liquid lipstick…love it 🙂
3.  Hourglass Aura Sheer Lip Stain in Aura Flush…I love stains.  This one in particular doesn’t dry out my lips and lasts well and wears away evenly.  Worth the high end price!
4.  MAC Dazzleglass in Rags to Riches…pink and sparkly….looks amazing over a deep pinky berry
5.  Urban Decay lipstick in Venom…my newest addition and beautiful colour for winter
6. Top left of my makeup bag is my compact – got it at a Fossil outlet…below that are my mini Tweezerman tweezers…I will never use any other brand
7.  Bottom right on my makeup bag – Sexy Mama translucent pressed powder from The Balm (my powder brush didn’t fit in my makeup bag)
8. Below my bag – Stila Artful eye collector’s edition vol. II – a small, portable, eyeshadow palette consisting of five neutral shades with my RiRi hearts MAC dual eyeshadow brush…just in case a touchup was needed.
9. Laying across the palette and bag – Urban Decay 24/7 Eyeliner in Perversion…the blackest black eyeliner ever…if you need one this is the one you want!
10. To the right of my bag are three non-makeup related items – travel sized Bliss hand cream in Blood Orange and White Pepper, Blistex medicated lip balm and a decorative hair elastic from Foxy jewelry.

And that’s it!  The contents change often but I will always have hand cream, lip balm and one or two lip glosses or lipsticks in my bag…Fuchsia was the colour theme I was going for on this day!

What’s in your makeup bag?  Do you have a love/hate relationship with any kind of makeup?

Hugs and love!

Blogmas Day 29 – Where have you travelled to?

I have been blessed with an intense desire to travel and to see the world.  When I was younger we travelled quite a bit as a family…as an adult I am just starting to be able to afford my own adventures.

I believe travelling helps you grow as a person and expands your mind and soul.  I have quite the list of places I have yet to travel to but I am so incredibly thankful for all the places I have already experienced!

The following is a list of all the places I have travelled:

British Columbia
Nova Scotia
New Brunswick
Quebec City
San Diego
Las Vegas
New York
South Carolina
New Orleans
Dominican Republic
Australia (pretty much all of Victoria!)

Are you a traveller?  What has been your favourite destination?

Blogmas Day 28!!!!

What are you looking forward to?!

I’ve talked about it enough but definitely my teaching exchange. More importantly I’m really looking forward to being ready to go. All the packing, cleaning an organizing I’m not looking forward to but having it all done and being relaxed and ready I’m looking forward to the most.

I’m also incredibly looking forward to seeing my friends again and continuing my friendships.

Crazy that it’s only 19 days till I leave!!

What is on your agenda that you’re looking forward to?!

All These Places Feel Like Home

Blogmas Day 27 – Post your favourite recipe

It’s a funny one because I don’t actually eat them when I make them…A few years ago I was searching for a good brownie recipe and found an amazing one that is easy to make and tastes delicious (thanks Ina!)…Over the years I have made many batches but have only “taste tested” them (I’m not a chocolate fan).  Using this recipe I have adapted them and have turned them into s’more brownies (adding mini marshmallows on top) and turtle brownies (chopped pecans, drizzled caramel and mini chocolate chips on top)…but nothing beats the demand for just the plain ones (I always omit the walnuts…just the chocolate chips…oh and I also don’t add the instant coffee)!!  If you love brownies, or chocolate, you must make these!!

Happy baking!

Throwback Thursday – No Shame….

Blogmas Day 26 – An Old Photo Of Yourself

Sooooo….I could have chosen a super cute picture of me stuffing my face with spaghetti, or getting a bath from my retro mom…but I thought I would get right to the core of the awkward stage that was me during pretty much my entire adolescence….if you question where my lifelong insecurity comes from just take a look at this gem…and before you ask, yes…that is a mullet.

Happy Blogmas! Playing catch-up!

Merry Christmas everyone!  It is a quiet day for me…hanging with my pooch at my mom’s house.  Dinner is done and I figured on getting caught up with my missed blogs.  I will include day 22 – 25 here so get ready! (I will keep them short…)

Day 22 – The best thing to happen to me this year.

I would have to say my acceptance into a teaching exchange program right back to the part of Australia I was living in.  I put in my application late and was told that it could hinder my chances of placement but I went ahead anyway…with a 3 hour radius as a guide/limit for my placement request I never thought I would get placed….but then came a match directly to the town I had been living in not 2 years ago.  Crazy!  I am so looking forward to the challenge and the new experiences I will have on my own.  Can’t wait!  (I do need time to slow down just a little bit so I can get all the loose ends tidied up though!)

Day 23 – My Dream Job

I have always been hooked on cooking and experimenting in the kitchen.  I love food and get lost in cookbooks and cooking shows like nobody’s business. I think my dream job would be to be talented enough to run my own kitchen/restaurant.  I love feeding people…I rarely spend any effort on food for myself but will jump at the chance to cook for friends or family.  Maybe in my retirement I will take cooking lessons and see where that leads 😉

Day 24 – Your Favourite Childhood Book

I would have to say it would be Uncle Wiggily…now if you know who Uncle Wiggily is I love you!  When I say my parents used to refer to me as Nurse Jane Fuzzywuzzy my friends look at me like I have ten heads.  She was Uncle Wiggily’s nurse (another job I would love to have…#2 to chef) and took good care of him…I guess from a young age I used to make sure everyone was okay and take care of them.  I loved Uncle Wiggily and have fond memories of being read to by my dad from that book (I still have it!)

What’s your favourite childhood book??!!

Day 25 – My 5 favourite blogs

1.  The inspiration behind many things in my life:  You NEED to follow her.  She is amazing.  LOVE

2.  My favourite little family ever:

3. I feel like she is my sister and we have been separated at birth…she doesn’t know I exist and would most likely think that is a creepy comment to make but I absolutely adore her and would love to meet her someday…her blog and her videos got me through all of last christmas.  She’s great!  Check her out:

4.  Where I got the idea to do this challenge (sorry I didn’t rock it as well as you…not missing any more till I’m done!) Thanks Mel!

5. I have been in tears reading some of the posts on this blog…if you haven’t checked them out please do…hilarious!!

Merry Christmas everyone.  I promise I won’t miss another day of the challenge…I will stay on top of it!  I am also going to play around with my new camera and possibly have a video up by the new year for you all to judge!  Hope you all had a lovely Christmas or are enjoying a few days of holidays if you don’t celebrate!

Hugs and love

She Don’t Cook Mashed Potatoes

Happy Blogmas day 21 everyone!  I apologize for missing the last few days but with the holidays approaching, and a bit of an ice storm where I live, there were many more important things to tend to rather than this blog (as much as I love it)

I was planning on skipping Day 20 regardless…I was to talk of a difficult time during my life and since it is the holidays I didn’t want to dwell on the sad stuff…so moving on!

Day 21 – My ten favourite foods!

This is most likely the hardest thing for me to narrow down only because I absolutely love food. LOVE IT!  More on this on Day 23!  Because this is difficult I am going to try to focus on the top 10 things I have loved at restaurants…mostly from when I was in Australia…

1.  My five course dinner I had at Stefano’s in Mildura, VIC.  Everything was delicious but one of the courses stood out to me…there was a lamb dish done three ways that was out of this world…I wasn’t a huge eater of lamb before I went to Australia but now it’s one of my favourites!

2.  Move from Mildura to Melbourne…where I have eaten some of the best food (and definitely the best coffee) of my life…I had this amazing cauliflower dish at a restaurant called Cumulus…it consisted of creamy roasted cauliflowers in some sort of truffle cream.  OH MY GOD it was so good!!

3.  Still in Melbourne and one of the first restaurants I ate at called Coda.  Super cool joint with this amazing mozzarella and pea salad…so delish.  One of the best salads I have ever had.

4.  Back to North America…NYC…ate at Momofuko Ssam Bar and had the most delicious pork buns.  I had never had anything like it before and they were amazing.  I could have eaten 100 of them.

5.  Moama, NSW…just around the corner from where I lived for 6 months was a lovely winery where I had my first ever “bubbles and squeak”…it was a pork chop dish with bubbles and squeak and it was amazing.  I would have licked my plate if I could have!

6. Chicago, IL….Table 52…Fried Green Tomatoes.  All I can say is I was in heaven.  HEAVEN!!!!!

7.  Momofuko again…this time dessert…I am not a fan of chocolate per se so when we asked our server what dessert to get and he mentioned this chocolate dish I was very meh about it…I ate my indifference that’s for sure! Best dessert I have ever had. Some chocolate mousse with plum jelly candies or something…it was sweet and sour and amazing.

8.  Alcohol counts as food??  It does when it’s made with avocado!  La Jolla, CA at an amazing restaurant called Whisknladle I had the best cocktail I have ever had…London’s Burning…gin, avocado juice, lime and jalapeños…sounds disgusting…try it!

9.  Back to Cumulus in Melbourne…I think this was my favourite stop on my food journey while there…just like lamb, duck was never high on my list of things to order.  I now know better…much better!  Duck on a bed of whole grain/seed mix…doesn’t sound great but trust me…it was!

10. Last but definitely not least…Mexican…It is my favourite “genre” of food…does food have genres?!  I ate at a cool place in Melbourne called Mamasita…delish.  We did have tacos and tostaditas but it was definitely not taco bell!

I know Canada has some amazing restaurants as well but I just haven’t had the opportunity (or have been with someone) who loves exploring food as much as I do…sorry it wasn’t a true “these are my favourite foods” list…but it is so much more interesting this way I think…when I eat amazing food I love to share!

What are some of your favourite places to eat?  Where have you had the best meal of your life?!!

Hugs and Love!

I’ve Got Tears In My Ears Sometimes

Blogmas Day 19!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What do you collect.

Shortest post yet…Nothing.

I buy a lot of stuff I don’t need (makeup, clothes)…but I use them all!

I don’t “collect” anything…nothing against collectors, just doesn’t appeal to me!

Do you collect anything? If you do I think you’re fascinating!

Can You Show Me What I Still Can’t See

Bolgmas Day 18!!!!!!!!!!!!

The meaning behind your Blog name.

I am currently in love.

Not with a person but with a place.

Australia.  It’s a love affair I’ve had for as long as I can remember and has only gotten stronger over the years.

I had the opportunity to live in Australia less than two years ago.  Not as a young holiday worker but as a mature, out of work, leave of absence adventurer…and my love grew deeper.

Saying goodbye to my life here, I took a chance over there for six months.  In order to be able to keep those who were interested in my adventures in the loop I decided to (try to) keep a blog.  The biggest mistake was that I didn’t bring my laptop and was stuck updating on a mobile device…which, while doable, was not very practical…so I was rubbish at it.  But when deciding on a domain/web page name Upsidedowncanuck seemed appropriate…I was a Canadian in the land “down under”… (for those not in the know…Canadians are often referred to as Canucks)

And now I embark on a bigger/longer journey…with my laptop, a new camera and some burgeoning video editing skills which will help make my new adventures much more exciting!
